Catholic

110 listed in North Carolina. What they believe, and what a service is actually like.

A Catholic parish is a local congregation of the Roman Catholic Church, part of a diocese led by a bishop. North Carolina has two: the Diocese of Raleigh in the east and the Diocese of Charlotte in the west. The central act of worship is the Mass, which follows the same structure in every parish worldwide, so a Mass in Clayton runs the same way as a Mass in Chicago or Manila.

What to expect if you’ve never been

  • Mass lasting about an hour, offered several times each weekend — Saturday evening counts as Sunday.
  • A set order that alternates between the priest and the congregation, with a lot of standing, sitting, and kneeling. Following the person next to you works fine.
  • Four Scripture readings including a psalm, then a homily of 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Communion, during which most of the congregation comes forward. Non-Catholics are welcome at Mass but do not receive communion; crossing your arms over your chest signals you'd like a blessing instead.
  • Confession, adoration, and daily Masses offered during the week at published times.
  • Spanish-language Masses in many North Carolina parishes.

What Catholic churches believe

  • The bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ.
  • Scripture and sacred tradition together carry authority, interpreted by the Church's teaching office.
  • Seven sacraments mark the Christian life, beginning with infant baptism.
  • The Pope is the successor of Peter and the visible head of the Church on earth.
  • Mary and the saints are honoured and asked to pray, not worshipped.

Common questions

Can I attend Mass if I'm not Catholic?

Yes. Anyone may attend. You simply don't receive communion — you can stay seated or come forward with arms crossed for a blessing.

What is a vigil Mass?

A Saturday evening Mass that fulfils the Sunday obligation. It is a normal Sunday Mass held the night before.

Do I need to know when to stand and kneel?

No. Follow the people around you. Nobody expects a visitor to know the pattern.
