What to expect at a Catholic church

A Catholic parish is a local congregation of the Roman Catholic Church, part of a diocese led by a bishop. North Carolina has two: the Diocese of Raleigh in the east and the Diocese of Charlotte in the west. The central act of worship is the Mass, which follows the same structure in every parish worldwide, so a Mass in Clayton runs the same way as a Mass in Chicago or Manila.

  • Mass lasting about an hour, offered several times each weekend — Saturday evening counts as Sunday.
  • A set order that alternates between the priest and the congregation, with a lot of standing, sitting, and kneeling. Following the person next to you works fine.
  • Four Scripture readings including a psalm, then a homily of 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Communion, during which most of the congregation comes forward. Non-Catholics are welcome at Mass but do not receive communion; crossing your arms over your chest signals you'd like a blessing instead.
