Who they belong to

Each congregation governs itself. The local Baptist association for Johnston County is the Triangle East Baptist Association, called the Johnston Baptist Association until recently, which was organized in 1903 and has its office in Selma. Through an association and the Baptist State Convention, churches cooperate on missions and church planting without giving up any say over their own pulpit.

Not every Baptist church in Clayton is Southern Baptist

Clayton is also home to Original Free Will Baptist congregations, which are a separate denomination with roots in eastern North Carolina going back to 1727, as well as independent and Missionary Baptist churches. The sign alone won't always tell you which is which.

What to expect at a Southern Baptist church

  • One main Sunday morning service, typically 60 to 90 minutes, often with a second earlier or later service in larger churches.
  • A sermon of 30 to 45 minutes that works through a Bible passage. This is the centre of the service, not a segment of it.
  • Music that ranges from hymns with a piano and choir to a full contemporary band, depending entirely on the individual church. Two Southern Baptist churches in the same town can feel completely different.
  • An invitation at the end of the service to come forward, speak with someone, or make a decision. Nobody will make you.
