Clayton is a Baptist town that stopped being only a Baptist town about twenty years ago. Sitting on US-70 between Raleigh and Smithfield, it grew from a small Johnston County mill and rail town into a place that added more than half again to its population between 2010 and 2020, in what was the fastest-growing county in the state that decade.
