PCA or PCUSA, in Raleigh

The two are separate denominations with separate regional bodies here: PCA churches answer to Eastern Carolina Presbytery, and PCUSA churches to the Presbytery of New Hope, whose office is in Raleigh. The PCA is the more conservative of the two, ordaining only men as pastors and elders and holding to a stricter reading of the Westminster Confession. Both are Reformed, both baptize infants, and both are governed by elders rather than by a bishop.

What to expect at a PCA church

  • A structured Sunday service, usually 70 to 80 minutes, following a printed order of worship.
  • A mix of traditional hymns and modern hymnody; some congregations use a full band, others a piano only.
  • An expository sermon of 35 to 45 minutes working through a book of the Bible.
  • Corporate confession of sin, a reading of assurance, and often a recited creed or catechism question.
