United Methodist churches in Raleigh

Methodism in Raleigh is as old as the city's churches get: Edenton Street was organized in 1811, a block from the Capitol. It has also been through its biggest change in a century since 2022, when hundreds of North Carolina congregations voted to leave the United Methodist Church. Why an old directory may be wrong

Between 2022 and 2023 the denomination allowed congregations to leave with their buildings under a temporary rule. In the North Carolina Conference, which includes Raleigh, 249 churches were approved to leave in November 2022 and 18 more in October 2023, and the rule expired at the end of 2023. Some of those churches joined the Global Methodist Church, which launched on May 1, 2022; others went independent. A church sign may still say Methodist either way, so check the date on the listing, or the church's own site, before assuming.

What to expect at a United Methodist church

  • A structured service following an order of worship, usually printed in a bulletin you're handed at the door.
  • Hymns, often with an organ or piano and a choir. Contemporary services exist, frequently at a separate time.
  • A sermon of 15 to 25 minutes — shorter than in most Baptist or non-denominational churches.
  • Communion on the first Sunday of the month in most congregations, and an open table: you do not need to be a member or a Methodist to receive it.
